UK terror probe: PM speaks to Brown

UK terror probe: PM speaks to Brown

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has spoken to British PM Gordon Brown regarding the failed terror attacks in London and Glasgow last week.
Eight people have thus far been held in the probe, including three Indians.
According to reports, Singh has assured the British leader that India will offer all cooperation in the terror probe.
However, he has cautioned that labelling Indians and Pakistanis as terrorists is avoidable and that no hasty conclusions should be drawn on whether the arrested Indians are guilty.
Meanwhile, an Australian court has extended by 96 hours the custody of Dr Mohammad Haneef, the Indian doctor who is being held in Brisbane by the Australian Police.
Haneef is being held in Brisbane by the Australian Police in connection with the failed London-Glasgow terror attacks.
The lady chief inspector from the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Unit is on a tight deadline, having a court order to detain Haneef without charge only until late Thursday.
Earlier, NDTV spoke with Jason Rawlin, the Brisbane reporter of ABC News, who said that time is really running out for the authorities to either charge or let Mohammed Haneef go.
In a related development, a media report has argued that the London bomb plot failed due to the malfunctioning of a medical syringe used as part of the firing mechanism.

Quoting non-classified documents reviewed by it, ABC News reported that mobile phones were to trigger a firing device in a Mercedes E 300 parked near a nightclub.
These mobiles reportedly failed to set off the blast.

At least 100 students of Lal Masjid surrender

At least 100 students of the radical Lal Masjid here surrendered on Wednesday before a fresh deadline set by the Pakistani government ended even as the two hardline clerics along with several other students remained holed up inside.

The surrender came as President Pervez Musharraf announced a reward of Rs 5,000 for every student who surrenders besides pardoning them and giving travel facilities to all of them.

Pakistani officials said around 100 male and female students of the madrassa have surrendered. Before that six girl students of the seminary came out and were taken away by their parents.

The government was expected to fix a new deadline after a meeting of federal cabinet in view of the "mass desertions".

Some students who spoke to waiting journalists complained that they were being pressurised not to leave by mosque authorities.

The two radical clerics, Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rahid Ghazi, were still defiant inside the mosque along with some hardline students and were resisting efforts to surrender.

Reports also said that the bodies of three students who were killed by army snipers were lying inside the mosque.

The bloody stand off between the mosque students and the security forces surrounding the seminary has till now claimed 21 lives and injured over 150.

BBC journalist free after 114-day ordeal in Gaza

The kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston has been released after 114 days in captivity in the Gaza Strip.

The 45-year-old was kidnapped at the start of the March by the Army of Islam, a militant group led by the Doghmush clan, a powerful and heavily-armed family in Gaza City.

He was released in the early hours of this morning after Hamas security forces surrounded the stronghold of the clan.

Hamas had previously called for Mr Johnston's release and had said it knew where he was being held, but did not carry out a raid for fear he would be harmed.

Speaking from Gaza last night, the journalist said he felt "the most unimaginable relief" to be free and described his ordeal as "appalling" and "occasionally terrifying".

According to Eduardo Garcia's latest calculations, which first appeared Monday on his Sentido Comun (‘Common Sense’) site, Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim climbed into the No. 1 spot with a fortune of $67.8 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2007.
Slim controls Mexico's largest fixed-line telephone company, Telefonos de Mexico, or Telmex, and owns other businesses in sectors from construction and music to restaurants and cigarettes. Garcia says Slim's current wealth represents nearly 8 percent of Mexico's total Gross Domestic Product.

In April, Forbes magazine reported that Slim had overtaken U.S. investor Warren Buffett to become the world's second-richest person, with holdings of $53 billion.
But according to Garcia, Slim took over the No. 1 spot as early as late March, with a fortune surpassing Gates' by about $1 billion. Garcia attributed Slim's latest rise to a 26.5 percent second-quarter bump in share prices for America Movil SA, the largest wireless service provider in Latin America, which Slim controls. Garcia's estimate of Gates' latest worth is based on a 5.7 percent rise in Microsoft shares during the same period.
Garcia acknowledged that his second-quarter calculations do not include possible gains in Gates' holdings outside of Microsoft, which according to Forbes represent more than half of the software mogul's fortune. He also noted that he does not take into account Slim's holdings outside of his numerous companies.

Forbes did not comment on Garcia's calculations but said its next valuation of Gates' wealth will appear in September, in the annual Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. A calculation of Slim's worth will be published next March, the magazine said.
